Scarring

Scars are undesired marks on your skin after an injury. When the deep, thick layer of skin is damaged, it forms scars to repair the wound. Except for the minor ones, most wounds result in scarring. Scars may result from accidents, surgeries or skin conditions like acne.

What Causes Scarring?

• When the body forms new collagen fibres to mend the damage
• When your body produces too much collagen
• When underlying supporting skin is lost
• When skin gets stretched rapidly (during pregnancy or growth of spurts
• It may even occur due to acne, chicken pox or infections

Symptoms of Scarring

• Scare occurs at the site of tissue damage and appears as a firm red to purple.
• Over time, scars flatter and become lighter in color.
• Scars can have a pitted appearance
• Skin healing process results in scars.

Usually, there is no pain or physical discomfort associated with the scars. Several options like surgical excision, laser treatment, radiation, and steroid injection are used to remove spots with an ugly appearance. However, the case of more extensive scars located on elbows or knees affect mobility, and there is no treatment to remove such marks.

FAQs

What are the different types of scars?

Hypertrophic scars are raised but remain within the boundary of the original wound, while keloid scars involve overgrown tissue that extends beyond the wound. Atrophic scars appear sunken and are often the result of acne or chickenpox. Contracture scars occur when the skin tightens, commonly following burns.

Yes, they do. They typically become flatter, softer, and lighter in colour over months or years.

Some people scar more easily than others due to a combination of factors, such as genetics (as some individuals are naturally predisposed to forming raised or thick scars), age (younger skin tends to heal faster), wound care, and, of course, the type of injury. All these factors together determine how the skin responds and heals over time.

How your skin heals can be influenced, however, and depending on the injury, certain scars cannot be prevented. However, proper wound care, avoiding infection, and protecting healing skin from sun exposure can help reduce scarring.

Fractional laser therapy is an excellent way to combat scarring. The treatment works by sending tiny, controlled bursts of heat into the skin, creating small treatment areas called microscopic treatment zones. These zones trigger the body’s natural healing process, removing damaged skin and encouraging the growth of new, healthy cells. This boosts collagen, improves skin texture, and helps make scars less visible.

SkinPen Microneedling creates tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which, similar to Fractional Laser therapy, also trigger the body’s natural healing process. This, in turn, stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, helping to fill in depressed scars and remodel raised or fibrous scars for a smoother, more even texture. Over multiple sessions, scars gradually become less noticeable, and skin texture improves.
