Radiofrequency microneedling, also known as RF microneedling or RFMN, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy.
Sure, it may sound like something from the future, but the results are out of this world. Plus, you may also be surprised to know that RF microneedling has been around for almost 2 decades!
In short, the procedure uses fine needles to create tiny micro-injuries in your skin, while delivering heat via RF energy deep into your dermis. This stimulates collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production (all vital components in keeping your skin young and plump), leading to skin remodeling and rejuvenation.
And radiofrequency microneedling has become increasingly popular over the years, loved by celebrities, social media influencers, and our patients alike. Here is why.
RF Microneedling vs Microneedling

Regular microneedling uses a device with tiny needles to gently puncture your skin in order to trigger your body’s natural healing response. It primarily focuses on the surface to mid-dermis. And it is best for combatting fine lines, mild acne scars, uneven skin tone, and texture.
Whereas radiofrequency microneedling delivers radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis. The heat from RF causes deeper tissue tightening and stimulates more collagen remodeling. Even though it uses a similar needle to traditional collagen induction therapy, it can target deeper skin layers than microneedling alone, also helping to tighten existing collagen fibers. RF energy is also “colour-blind”, meaning it bypasses pigmentation. This means it can safely treat all skin types, even darker phototypes, thanks to deeper and more controlled energy delivery.
If you are in the market to reduce the appearance of moderate to deep acne scars, skin laxity (looseness), wrinkles, and/or stretch marks, RF microneedling is probably the way to go.
But what do the stats say? A 2021 review of 42 high-quality studies on RFMN found that it is highly effective for skin rejuvenation, acne, and acne scars. There is also early but promising evidence that it can help with rosacea, stretch marks, and male-pattern hair loss when combined with topical treatments. One study even reported that a single RFMN session could improve skin by about 37%, producing results similar to a facelift but without the risk of scarring.
Not to mention, another comprehensive review confirmed that RFMN is safe and effective for a wide range of skin concerns, including keloids, stretch marks, and melasma.
Those dealing with acne may be happy to know that a recent study followed 44 people with medium to darker skin tones (types III–V) who underwent four sessions of RF microneedling. After treatment, their acne scars improved noticeably. Doctors rated the results as “good” or “excellent” for 70% of the patients, and 82.5% of the patients reported being happy with the results.
“I always explain that microneedling RF is a regenerative treatment — results build gradually over weeks as collagen and elastin matures. The most successful outcomes come from an honest and detailed consultation tailored with parameters, and a strong aftercare plan is an absolute must.” – Flavio Refrigeri
Celebrities Who Have Tried It

Having had a look at the numbers above, it should come as no surprise that numerous high-profile figures have either endorsed or been reported as using RF microneedling.
Kim Kardashian, for example, has publicly praised RF treatments. Other famous faces who have been raving about RF microneedling include Khloe Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Holden, and Judy Murray.
In fact, Kim Kardashian said, “This is a game changer!” about RF microneedling, whilst her sister Khloe said, “[It] changes the cards on the table.”
Lindsay Lohan said that she is “obsessed” with the effects she has seen, whilst Amanda Holden reportedly said, “I’ve noticed a real plumpness to my skin and it’s much tighter. I’m more than happy to shout from the rooftops how brilliant this new treatment is!”
It is generally believed that various A-listers swear by this treatment due to its efficacy, overall safety profile, and minimal downtime. After all, if the cameras are watching, nobody wants to be caught having had “work done.”
Celebrities may be drawn to the treatment because of the positive feedback they receive from skincare professionals or fellow industry peers.
Let’s Talk Side Effects
The most common side effects typically include some redness, swelling, itching, dryness, scaling, or flaking. These, however, are usually mild and temporary, and tend to resolve within a few days. Less common side effects include pain or discomfort, bruising, as well as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (although rare, these effects are possible).
In order to minimise any potential adverse effects, it is vital to book a consultation with a qualified professional before scheduling your appointment. It is also essential to always adhere to post-treatment guidelines to promote healing and minimise complications.
Wrapping It All Up
Here is the grand finale: whether to consider RF microneedling. The reality is, if you have specific skin concerns you want to address, only a consultation can guide you toward the right course of action.
That said, RF microneedling is a scientifically backed skin treatment with growing popularity, both in dermatology clinics and among celebrities. It is excellent for treating enlarged pores, acne, acne scars, signs of ageing, and improving overall skin texture. It also helps boost product absorption, is customisable, and enhances overall skin health, all in a 90-minute session.
