Summertime means sunshine, the beach, golden tans and a healthy-looking glow! What’s not to love about it?
However prolonged exposure to UV rays can also reveal itself in less welcome ways.
By the end of the season, skin can appear duller, drier and less even; and pigmentation, redness, fine lines and changes in skin texture might become more noticeable.
The good news is that post-summer skin does not necessarily require an overhaul. The right treatment can be selected according to what your skin needs most. This might mean targeting pigmentation, restoring hydration or addressing signs of ageing and uneven texture.
At Fiore Aesthetics, a personalised consultation is the starting point for determining which approach is the most appropriate for you.
Here are some of the treatments which can help restore a brighter, smoother and more balanced complexion after summer. Each addresses a specific concern.
For Pigmentation
One of the most common visible effects of prolonged sun exposure is pigmentation.
Pigmentation might mean different things for different people, and could include sun spots, age spots and areas of hyperpigmentation. These areas of skin discolouration can become more pronounced after months of UV exposure, particularly when SPF protection has been inconsistent.
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) can be an effective option for reducing the appearance of sun spots, age spots and hyperpigmentation.
The treatment uses pulses of light which are absorbed by pigmented cells, helping to break them down so that the skin can gradually shed the affected cells and regenerate. It can also help improve overall skin clarity, promote a more even skin tone and address redness and broken capillaries.
Timing matters when treating sun-damaged skin and although IPL can be performed throughout the year, we recommend considering treatment during the winter months, when there is less likelihood of significant sun exposure.
A series of treatments is often recommended for the most effective and sustained improvement, depending on the individual and their skin concerns.
Me-Line Pigmentation Peel
For more stubborn pigmentation, there is the Me-Line Pigmentation Peel. This innovative peel has been designed specifically for pigmentation concerns.
It can address sun spots, age spots, melasma, post-acne marks and other forms of hyperpigmentation.
Its active ingredients work to reduce excess melanin production while gently removing dead skin cells. This helps to break up existing areas of discolouration and reveal clearer-looking skin beneath.
A course of two to three Me-Line sessions is generally recommended, ideally during the winter months.
For Uneven Tone And Redness
Not all post-summer changes are brown spots. For some complexions, the aftermath of sun exposure is a combination of uneven tone, redness and increased visibility of broken capillaries.
IPL
IPL is also particularly effective for addressing uneven skin tone and redness. The treatment can help to reduce redness and broken capillaries, while improving overall skin clarity and tone. It may also stimulate collagen production over time, supporting a firmer and smoother-looking complexion.
There is some preparation involved. Our team advises avoiding intense sun exposure and sunbeds for at least four weeks before the patch test or treatment, while a patch test and consultation are required before proceeding.
After treatment, temporary redness or swelling can occur and may resemble a mild sunburn. Strict sun avoidance and daily SPF 50 are essential afterwards, alongside avoiding exfoliants, retinol and acids during the advised recovery period.
For Texture And Fine Lines
If summer has left your skin feeling rougher, less refined or more lined, resurfacing may be the more appropriate route.
Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing
Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing works differently from treatments which primarily target pigmentation. Rather than treating the entire skin surface, the laser technology creates thousands of tiny treated areas while leaving surrounding skin intact.
This approach promotes healing and encourages the body’s production of collagen, helping to improve the appearance of scarring, ageing concerns and overall skin quality.
We also offer a gentler version of fractional laser resurfacing for those with fine lines and milder signs of ageing.
For more significant concerns, a course of treatments may be recommended, with at least three sessions suggested for the best results in many cases.
This is a treatment which requires some planning. Sun exposure and sunbeds should be avoided before treatment, while post-treatment care includes avoiding makeup for the first 48 hours and direct sun exposure for four weeks.
Daily SPF 30 or 50 is advised during the healing period.
For Dullness And Dehydration
Sometimes the most obvious sign of post-summer skin is simply that it has lost its freshness. Heat, environmental exposure and time in the sun can leave the complexion looking tired, dry and lacking in luminosity.
Oxygen Facial
For skin that needs replenishing rather than intensive resurfacing, an Oxygen Facial offers a gentler approach. The treatment combines cleansing and enzyme exfoliation with oxygen therapy, nourishing serums and Cryo cooling. These are to refresh and rejuvenate the complexion.
The process is designed to provide hydration while helping to infuse antioxidants and support a plumper, more revitalised appearance.
Skin often appears healthier, refreshed and more radiant following the treatment, with hydration helping to leave it feeling soft and supple. There is no downtime, making it particularly appealing when the aim is to revive tired-looking skin without interrupting your routine.
For Gentler Rejuvenation
Then there are times when your skin requires a gentler reset.
LED Therapy
LED Light Therapy provides a non-invasive option for restoring sun-damaged skin. It requires no needles or surgery and is safe, painless and suitable for all skin types.
Different wavelengths of light are selected according to the skin concern. Red LED light, for example, is used to support collagen and address the appearance of wrinkles, while blue light is used to target acne-causing bacteria.
The light penetrates the skin to stimulate cellular activity, helping support repair, reduce inflammation and promote healing.
A typical session takes around 45 minutes. Following cleansing and preparation, the LED mask is applied for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Skin may appear slightly pink afterwards, but this should settle within 24 hours. Sessions can be scheduled weekly or fortnightly depending on the individual’s treatment plan.
Repairing Your Skin After Summer Starts with the Right Treatment
There is no single definition of sun-damaged skin, and consequently there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. For this reason, post-summer skin should be assessed by a consultant before treatment commences.
Still, while professional treatments can help address the visible effects of sun exposure, prevention remains central to maintaining results. This means using daily SPF and sensible UV protection to prevent pigmentation and sun-related changes from occurring.
Ultimately, you want to restore the clarity, smoothness and luminosity which allow your skin to look, and feel, its best. It’s about loving the summer but still keeping your healthy, vibrant glow! As author Kelly Elmore said: “Some of the best memories are made in flip-flops.”
